GUNNISON, Colo. – Under nearly perfect conditions in Gunnison, Colo., the Western State Colorado University men and women's cross country team put on a display of its talents for a huge hometown crowd Saturday morning.
Keifer Johnson, Western's top-returning runner from last year's fifth place team, paced a quick squad for the men, while
Cali Antolini was the women's victor.

Johnson (25:48) improved by eight seconds on his last years' time, running strong and smooth throughout the whole race. Â
John Patterson came in second with a time of 26:53, with
Bryant Byrd rounding out the top-three in a time of 27:33.

Antolini broke off and ran effortlessly down the straightaway to win in a time of 19:12 for the women.
Georgia Porter followed shortly in second with a time of 19:30, while Western's top-returning finisher from the National meet last season,
Alicja Konieczek, was third in 19:33.

The women's race was close, with the top-seven averaging under the second place time. On the men's side, the top seven was composed of two redshirting runners,
Michael Powell and
Dominic Compoz, averaging 27:09.

The Mountaineers, who ran unopposed in today's meet, are next scheduled to compete in three weeks at the Tiger Invitational hosted by Fort Hayes in Hayes, Kansas. The team will look to add another meet of competition to prepare for the conference and National championships.
